Michigan Box Co. was founded by Jacob Savin in 1927. In 1971 the Fontana family purchased Michigan Box from Jacob, establishing a new foundation for growth and innovation.
Throughout the 70s business boomed, becoming at one point the largest supplier of wood/corrugated windshield cradles in the county.
Carl Fontana and Louis Fontana Jr incorporated Fontana Forest Products, establishing a dedicated wooden packaging division for Michigan Box. They moved into the former Detroit Wire Wheel plant on Clayton Street. Success with specialized wood based solutions continued as Fontana Forest Products had buyers as far south as Mexico and developed new solutions for both automotive and aerospace industries.
Michigan Box transitioned leadership to Joseph Fontana (CEO), Bill Vasilofski (CFO), and Scott Keech (CSO). They led a modernization effort, expanding operations, achieving Food Safety and ISO certifications, and instilling a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and quality.
Joseph, Bill, and Scott acquired both companies from the Fontana family. Fontana Forest underwent major upgrades, culminating in a new production facility in 2018, equipped with automated saw machines.
Fontana Forest Products now operates a 45,000 sq ft production facility, processing over 2.5 million board feet of lumber annually. With a legacy built on growth, innovation and quality, the company continues to meet the demands of modern industries.
